DEFINITION OF UNITARY SYSTEM OF GOVERNMENT, FEATURES/CHARACTERISTICS, ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES

Unitary system also called "UNITARIANISM", is said to be as the system of government administration whereby all the political power both in the federal and state level is being centralized into the hand of the central/federal government.

'Uni' in English word means one, from this English word I hope we can deduce that this system is more of one tiers ruling, what do I mean by one tiers rule, tier are other division of a state that should sees to the
administration of the state in other for the work load not to be on the federal government.

Nomaly we should have (3) tiers of government which are namely: federal, state and local. But in the case of a unitary system of government the power isn't shared between this tiers but it is being centralized in the hand of a single body which is one of the above called the central government.

The central govt is the only source from which power emanates. In every unitary state, a unitary constitution is always put to practice and it serve as the utmost guide for the principles of unitarianism to prevail.

FEATURES/CHARACTERISTICS OF UNITARY SYSTEM OF GOVERNMENT

1. The governmental power is centralized in the hand of a single body called the federal government : federal government own the major power of all in every unitary state, even if the federal delegate a little power to the state in a unitary system, the ideology is still that they are totally subordinate and the power delegated to them is like what receives total dictations from the federal government, there is no full allocation of power to the other theirs in a unitary system of government, so, for this many people still believes it is like an advanced form of dictatorial govt which is totalitarianism.

2. It adopts a unitary constitution : unitary constitution is said to be an advance level of the the easy changes-flexible constitution, just as flexible constitution are easy to amend, so as unitary in all sense, flexible constitution is use by unitarian to make the constitution itself dance to its own tune, because of the rigid nature of a federal constitution, unitarian totally forbid such in its society.

3. The constitution is not Supreme the government is : you will be wondering that but all this while we have always hear things about constitution being superior of everybody in a state, even the so called legislature that wrote it but that is a wrong fact when it comes to UNITARIANISM, unitarians make themselves superior than the law of which they controls power ahead of law and they have immunity.

4.  The central government and the nation as a whole are strong : I know your question is how could they be? But the answer is they are because most of the time a unitary state might comprises of people of the same language, culture, perception, thinking and all that which make them very strong even in the face of physical attack compare to the big - but - problem federal system of government which encompasses many groups of people and cultures, which can in one way or the other break into internal conflicts, and what does internal conflict mean, this is the real definition of civil war, some countries have withness blood lost through federal system, countries like Sierra Leone from 1991-2002, Nigeria From 1967-1970.

5. The citizens own allegiance to one government : the only person the citizens own allegiance to in a unitary system is the central government, don't you think is better one system controls than diverse control that will lead to inordinate, the allegiance they own one man makes it better and benefitting to all.

ADVANTAGES OF UNITARY SYSTEM OF GOVERNMENT

1. The cost of running is not high : as it is the federal government that controls it all, it lightens the burden of having much tiers with more problems.

2.  It is stronger and a stabilize system of government : due to the unquestionable power of the federal government the citizens believes that the best is done for them through the will and does of their leaders, the loyalty showed by citizens makes it look more stable compare to the big for nothing federal system

3.  It removes any means of conflict of power : the friction or the problems that should have always for all time occur in the unitary system is being removed as a unitarian compare to federal system I.e the other tiers receives dictation from the federal government.

4. Uniformity in development scope : any country practicing a unitary system of government most times develop at the same pace because the country seems to be one and not into sections which brought about sentimental

5. It is less bureaucratic : the issues in this system doesn't for a long period of time, bureaucracy is a long debate on matter which does not most times occur in unitary system.

DISADVANTAGES OF UNITARY SYSTEM OF GOVERNMENT

1.  It does not encourage wider representation : so far the major power is in the hand of the federal government, youth representing the state might not be encourage because only the old strong folds hold the power.

2. It doesn't create more employment opportunities : employment opportunities are very less in a unitary state, due to duplication of office and other factors, it is incomparable to the might federal system.

3. The central government carries a lot of burden : as per the power is not shared with other tiers of government, the central government is over burden and can lead to maladministration.

4. Encouragement  of dictatorship : unitary system of government leads to dictatorship due to concentration of power,

5. The government is not closer to the people : unlike the federal system that even at the grassroot called local govt the people can venture in political administration, the unitarian stays in federal and far away to their people.
